it’s kinda weird.

This blogging thing, it’s kinda weird sometimes.  I have a ‘stats’ page and it shows me how many people are looking at my blog, but it feels like a fairly random number to me.  It doesn’t tell me who those people are or if they like what they see.  Is it someone who clicks in, takes a look, and then thinks “oh, how boring” and moves on?  I’m always surprised when someone says “I love your blog!  I read it all the time!” and I had no idea they were even reading.

Now, don’t feel like I’m casting any stones here, because I am also one of you.  I read lots of blogs that I almost never comment on.  Technically that makes me a “lurker” too.

But now that I am on the other side of that equation, I see how important those comments are.  The only time I really feel like people are enjoying what they see is when they leave comments.  I love getting your input!  I don’t care if your comment is short.  Even if you don’t feel like you have anything insightful to add, it’s still nice to hear from you.

photo cottage slate and tools

So, here’s some tips about commenting on my blog.

First, if you are a total newbie to blogland, the first step in commenting (or reading other comments) is to click on the little speech bubble to the right of the title of the post.  Hopefully there is a number inside the bubble, because that’s how many comments are already posted. Basic info, I know, but some people don’t know this.  Also, this is how it works on my computer, I think if you’re reading on your smart phone or iPad, it might look different.  But I can’t help you there.

Next, the very first time you leave a comment you will have to await moderation before your comment posts.  This is to help keep spammers out.  I hope it’s not too annoying for people.  And the key thing to keep in mind is that after you’ve done this once you will then be pre-approved for future comments.

When you leave a comment you will be asked for your email address.  This isn’t shared with anyone except me and it’s not posted anywhere on the blog.  I don’t sell email addresses or use them for any purpose other than to contact you directly if you win a give away or something like that.  You’ll also leave your name (which will be posted with your comment).  Feel free to leave just a first name, or perhaps you’d rather go by a nom de plume or an alias.  Go ahead and get creative!  You can also leave the name of your website, if you have one.

Here’s another tip about that.  Many of my commenters have great blogs of their own.  You can see them by clicking on their name above their comment.  If the text is blue, you can click on it and go visit their blog!

rose

Next, you have some options.  You can check a box to receive an email every time a new comment is posted to that particular blog post.  Keep in mind, you won’t just get my response to you, you’ll also get every other comment made on that post.  I don’t get 100’s of comments, so you are probably safe doing this.  However, if it’s a give-away post, you might want to avoid checking the box so you don’t get tons of annoying emails because those tend to get a lot of comments.

You can also check a box to get an email notification of new blog posts.  I highly encourage you to do that, wink, wink!

plant a garden manual

That’s it.  Simple right?!

So hey, if you have a minute, leave me a comment just to say hi!  Tell me a little bit about you!  Where do you live?  Do you paint furniture?  What’s your favorite color?  What is your decorating style?  I’ll be thrilled to hear from you, I promise!

  1. I read your blog every chance i get! It is my favorites along with Miss Mustard Seed’s. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and being so generous (I got a state trivia cards you were sending out and I love it (Maine) and the Hermione stamp you had on the letter). I just recently was most inspired by your Wallpaper dresser and just purchased some wallpaper from Hannah’s Treasures as you did. I wish I lived closer so I could take a workshop with you so for now, I have to learn from your blog. Thank you!

      1. thanks! All of it is addicting 🙂 Oh, I forgot to mention my favorite color is Kitchen Scale so I love the piece that you did in it that was featured in your old banner.

      2. I haven’t done any Kitchen Scale pieces in a while! I really need to re-visit that color. That buffet is my own piece. Still love it, still have it in my piano room. It’s kind of my ‘test’ piece. I painted it over a year ago, and it has held up beautifully. I’ve never re-waxed or added more hemp oil (although I’ve read that you should do that once a year or so) and it still looks great. I like knowing that my pieces stand the test of time.

  4. Good Morning! and thanks for the little blog tutorial. I read/browse/peruse many blogs- fashion, decor, food – and occasionally do post a comment. Mainly I have felt that there are probably so many readers that my comments would just be a drop in the ocean, so to speak. But not so? In that case I will try to comment more frequently so my hosts will not feel like they are “playing to an empty house.” After all, I really do want you to know how much I appreciate your posts, which are the fruit of your creativity and the inspiration for mine!

    1. I think that for other readers of the blog, comments might be a “drop in the ocean”, but for the blog author (me!) I think every comment is a nugget of gold! I get a notification of every comment, and of course I read them all. I try to respond to all of them too. Your analogy is perfect! Yes, it does feel a little like playing to an empty house sometimes. So keep the comments coming Kim. I appreciate every one of them!

And I enjoy yours so much! I love to paint furniture, with milk paint and chalk paint. Trying to get brave and open a booth in a local spot! I recently divorced and moved to Nashville to! So much smaller condo living! Determined to make wherever I am, a home I love! Fav colors, sea glass and Aqua! So there you have it! Keep up the good blog work!! 😀

    1. Sea glass! Nice choice. Love that color too. Have you seen the Martha Stewart paint in that color? I think it was years ago that I purchased a little sample pot of it. Very pretty. I’m glad I inspired you to comment on other blogs too, I know the bloggers in question will be happy to get your comments too!

Of course I’ve seen your work and it is lovely. I loved the country green cabinet you just did (fellow readers: click on her name to follow the link to Gilly’s blog to see it). I think your style is very fresh and young, and I need to try and add some of that to my own style! Especially the young part 😉

  8. Linda, I am both a ‘lurker’ and a ‘commenter’. Most of the time I open your blog post email first because I love your blog. It never fails to disappoint because you always have a new idea for paint colors, or a way to paint furniture along with old and fun stuff you have purchased. And your photos are pure bliss. I live in the Dallas Texas area where all old stuff is left behind in the move here so it makes it difficult to find beautiful/banged up but reasonably priced furniture. I don’t have a blog but would like to start one, but I am a little intimidated by the programming expertise needed. I paint furniture, odds and ends and love to collect old junk. You can find me at thrift stores, estate sales and in my garage or house fixing them up. I am in my mid 60’s but am still updating my decor, painting my walls or reading about decorating. Thanks for asking about us, I do think it’s fun to find out about other people in blog land. I always go to the ‘about me’ page on new blogs I’m reading. And as far as I’m concerned, please don’t change your content, I love it.

  9. Hi!
I’ve commented on occasion but I read every post! Being a blogger for many, many years, I know just how important those comments are. I remember years ago a blogger wrote , “I would roll around naked in my comments if I could!” I think I know what she meant. We blog because we really do want the feedback. And very often, it’s through those comments that relationships develop. I have met and built relationships with many of my social media contacts ( whether it was through my knitting or sewing blog) which makes sense! We love the same stuff which is why we read !
I have just left my day job to pursue the dream of owning a retail brick and mortar vintage home decor business. So I will be more actively blogging at ellen j goods .
I adore your style, Linda . And plan to keep you on my reading list!
(And to comment more. It’s been a busy year on my end!)

  11. First, you are the first blogger that I have ever followed…immediately, you had me with your photography, style and helpful advice. Your design style and creativity is amazing and beautiful, and your blog inspires me to do better. I wish I lived close to you, so that I could go and see the finished pieces up close and personal…plus, I have this secret wish that you would ask me to go “Pickin’ with you. The items you find and the adventure keep me hooked. I live in St. Louis, and there are many garage sales, etc., but, summer is hot here in the city…so, this is the time things really slow down for finding stuff. My creative partner and I are planning on doing our first “Vintage Show” at an area fairgrounds, so we are working hard on furniture and vintage items to showcase in our booth.

I love painting everything. I love many paint lines. I don’t think I have a favorite color. When I see all your colors, I want to do each one that you do. But, I think what really inspires me in your work is the storytelling through your photographs to the colors. I often say that I need to focus on color in my own work, and not just pick a color and paint.

So, please keep blogging. I need your beautiful inspiration!

    1. I totally would ask you to go “pickin” with me! As long as you have a bladder of steel and are willing to get up really early on a Saturday, my two requirements! July is kind of the ‘dead zone’ for garage sales here as well though. It’s just too hot and humid (although I’m sure nothing to compare with St. Louis). Around mid-August things will pick up again. Thanks so much for all of your kind compliments on my work. They really mean a lot to me! Good luck with your first show!

      2. Hi Candice! You can email me at oakdalecarriagehouse@gmail.com if you would like to send me some photos of your pieces. But unfortunately I don’t do a lot of custom work. I can’t handle the pressure of feeling like I have to get a certain outcome. When I paint pieces I like to be in control of all the decisions, what color, what style, what type of paint and topcoat. But email if you want to and I’ll take a look at your pieces.

  13. I’m a blog lurker. I leave comments only when the mood strikes, and that’s rarely, and yours is the only one. So, I’m going to paint something today using MMS European color Bergere….have you used it yet? I’m not usually a blue furniture person, so this is a big step for me. I used French Enamel on a small bench and that was a pretty, but brighter blue, so I’m hoping this is really as soft and muted as the photos appear.

    Like

    1. Hi Kristy! I’m glad you are still with me! Bergere is one of the few MMS colors that I have never used, but for no real reason. I just painted a cabinet in French Enamel though (will be posting it later this week). I have been really drawn to more saturated colors lately, like the green on the last dresser I did. Let me know how you like the Bergere! But meanwhile, feel free to keep on lurkin’ 😉

I still treasure my Utah card I received from you ( I even kept the envelope). 🙂 My heart skipped a beat when you posted a picture of the white glass front hutch. Please keep up all your great work!

    1. That white hutch was such a lovely piece. I enjoyed that for years before I parted with it (and I know it went to a good home and is keeping company with this piece and this piece). I still don’t have anything in the spot where it was on the porch, but having two hutches out there was overkill. I’m with you, I waffle between green and aqua. I have mostly blue in my own house, but I sure do love the “In a Pickle” green that I’ve been working with lately. I might have to find a spot for a green piece of my own! Keep reading from Utah Paulene!

You do a lot for promoting the products you use and I thank you for that! If you know if a blogger in Iowa I would love for them to know about me and possibly have the opportunity to provide a product from my line so they in turn can blogg about the experiece.

You get to the point on your projects with color choices for projects and why, ‘how to do it’ on painting, camera lighting (recent) and logos etc. to name a few. I have had an Antique/ Vintage shop in Gilroy CA for the last 23 years and as the trends change I as the proprietor need to change in what colors are popular (not always determined by Martha Stewert any longer!), styles of furniture for different rooms of the house, techniques of painting- the list is long. Merchandise is coming and going quickly so my choices of what to purchase need to be on point of what I think will sell. My tastes are very simalar to yours and it’s fun to see my painted pieces sell (thanks to your advice for all the above)
Thank you for sharing your fab expression of knowledge and your trials and errors for what you do. I have a tendency to be so involved with running the business that I loose site sometimes of the things that really draw my customers in which are- color, staging of ‘stuff’ with color and promoting the biz (logo!). You offer me all those things in a quick read at the beginning of my day which is wonderful breakfast ‘food’ for thought throughout my day. Thank you for sharing.

Keeping an eye on the comment count is also interesting. I discovered your blog from a comment made about you or perhaps a guest post you made on another blog, but it is amazing how many people around the world have found you! Who knew painted furniture was popular the world over?! From now on it will be more interesting to read the comments left by everyone now that we all know each other better.

We are finishing a cottage and trying to upcycle all my yard sale and kijiji finds (like Craigslist I think). I love seeing what you do with all your yard sale finds. Makes me jealous you seem to have so many great ones there! It helps me take a second look at things. I’m not good at finding a use for something on my own but you have put lots of ideas in my head for future projects or for things I might find or even have already. Keep up the great work! See, I write all this and still want to delete it but I will send it so you can have some feedback.

    1. Well, I am glad you didn’t delete it Sheila! And I’m happy to have you as a reader. Not too many people are going to read through all 80+ comments that have been left before yours, so not to worry … I might be the only one who actually sees this! I am pretty sure that kijiji is just like Craigslist, and we do actually have it down here, but I find that not too many people use it. I knew it was much more popular up there in Canada. I do manage to work full time and still get all of these projects done, but as I pointed out to Kim in an earlier comment, I don’t cook (or clean much for that matter). Luckily Mr Q helps out with some of that stuff so I don’t have to do it all! Thanks for your comment, and keep on reading!

  33. My name is Barb and I have been reading your blog for a while now. I live in Moberly, MO, sort of the north-central part of the state. I am not a painter of furniture per se, would love to be one though. I have yet to see you do something that I didn’t like. You have such an eye for putting things together and I have copied some of your ideas. I look so forward to getting your blog email and am so disappointed when there isn’t one! But I guess you do deserve a break now and then! I also love your sense of humor and know full well that if I lived in MN, we would be running buddies!

    1. Is “running buddies” another name for friends who hang out together in Moberly, MO? Because if it’s literal, I have to say, I am not a runner. I’ve tried it a few times but in the end I always hated it. I much prefer Zumba where an hour of cardio just flies by. But if it just means we would hit the garage sales together and fight over the good stuff, then I am in 😉 After all, we were both born in the year of the Kennedy assassination, so we have to stick together.

I would be your best customer! Your blog is my favorite and I do not enjoy furniture painting myself at all! 🙂 l love your humor as well!

    1. Hi Shelly! I do recognize your name from previous comments and from mailing out the state cards. You are not alone in disliking furniture painting. Every time my neighbor/handyman Ken sees me painting he just shakes his head and can’t believe I enjoy it. I’m glad you are a fan of the blog even though you never paint any furniture yourself! I hope you’ll keep reading.

  35. I have a list of favorite blogs that I check weekly and others like yours that I look forward to getting via email as you soon as you make a new post.
Not commenting every time does not mean I enjoy a post any less. I like to save my comments for those items and post that I feel strongly about. Like that fabulous green dresser. Wish I lived closer but alas I am across the border in central Wisconsin. Envious of all those that purchase your items locally. Keep posting, I’ll keep reading!

    1. No need to apologize Sock Monkey! You’ve left plenty of comments. You are also welcome to lurk as much as you want to. But thanks for letting me know that you are still out there!

  36. Wow, you got a lot of cool comments. And from all over the world. The niece and I are looking forward to the sales starting up again. We really need those kitchen chairs and a china closet. Also something to store the trash cans in and one more storage piece for the craft room. Looks like there will be quite a few people coming to Eye Candy on Sunday.

  38. Hi Linda! I found your blog after you commented on my very first blog post last year. You were so kind to do that and it meant a lot to me that you took the time to not only read about my project, but comment on it too! So I totally get where you are coming from here! I’m in beautiful small town just north of Boston and love pretty much any shade of blue. If I had to describe my style it would probably be coastal cottage meets boho farmhouse and had a baby. Does that even make sense? Have a great week!

    1. That sounds like a lovely part of the country, I’ve always loved the East coast. There is just so much more history out there. Your boho farmhouse coastal cottage baby cracks me up!

  39. Hi Linda…you are the only one…the only blog I follow every day…I look forward to each post. I was inspired by you to take apart my cherry “1990’s” ( you know the type) bedroom set and paint it. So far the night stands are done. I had to stop for the summer as the humidity is 5,000% here in St. Louis! Thanks for all you creative ideas..love them.

    1. I do know the type! I have one myself. I’m still debating whether or not to paint my sleigh bed that is part of the set. Are you happy with how your night stands turned out?

Love your blog and your work. Someday I will make it to a carriage house sale. Are you going to vendor at Junk Bonanza this fall?

    1. Thanks Tammy! Nope, I gave up on Junk Bonanza. It was too much work, and too expensive for me. But, I will be at Eye Candy REfind in Hastings this Sunday! I’ll be posting all of the details tomorrow, so if you are free on Sunday afternoon, pencil it in.
