a spice rack?

My friend Sue found this … well … I don’t really know what it is … for me recently.

What do you think its original purpose was?  I’m leaning towards shoe shine box.  Those dark stains could be shoe polish.

I thought I’d give it a new life repurposed for something else though.

I started by painting it with Dixie Belle’s Drop Cloth, once dry I distressed the edges and then added an I.O.D. transfer to the top.

That section from the Brocante set fit perfectly.

I then gave the entire piece a coat of clear wax.

Next I lined it with some gingham paper, and added a metal label holder to the front with the same paper added.

Now all that’s left is to figure out what it could be used for … other than a shoe shine box that is.

My first thought was ‘spice rack’.

Wouldn’t it be cute sitting on the kitchen counter filled with spices?

But maybe you don’t really cook all that much, and instead you prefer to spend your time crafting.

Well, it would work great for holding your craft paints and/or inks.

Why do I have so much ink, when I rarely use it any more?

Somehow I just can’t seem to part with it.

Then of course, there is always the option of just using it to display your non-collection of vintage cameras.

Or some other non-collection that is on the small side.

So many possibilities!

What would you use it for?

  1. I love its new look! It does look like it would have been a shoe shine still before. Now it can be anything the owner would want it to be. What a unique find and a lovely job!

  2. Hey, Oakdale! Happy September! Was your first step actually painting? What about bleed-thru? Especially for this piece, I’d have thought for sure you’d B,O,S.S. it first…

    1. Good question Edina! It would have been smarter to B.O.S.S. it first, but sometimes I don’t follow my own advice 😉 In this case, I was already painting something else in Drop Cloth and I thought I’d just swipe some on this piece and see what happened. Had those black stains bled thru my paint, I could always have gone back and added some B.O.S.S. and then painted over it again. You can add B.O.S.S. over an initial coat of paint if you notice bleed thru after the fact. Just keep in mind that sometimes bleed thru can take a few days to appear. If you’ve already applied a transfer over your paint, and then it bleeds through a couple of days later you are sunk (I had that happen here). So in this case, I painted this piece and then waited several days to make sure there weren’t any stains coming through before adding that transfer to the top.
