measuring success, and a blogiversary giveaway.

It was three years ago today that I started this blog.  Wowza.  Time flies!  I can’t believe it has been three years already.

It seems like an anniversary is always a good time to evaluate where you are and where you want to go.

hat-box

A good time to stop and wonder, why do I do this?  And am I successful at it?

Success is defined as:

  • the accomplishment of an aim or purpose.
  • the attainment of popularity or profit.
  • a person or thing that achieves desired aims or attains prosperity.

When I began my blog the goal was to use it to sell my painted furniture.  As it turns out, that has been hit or miss.  While I do occasionally sell a piece to a reader, those sales are not the norm.  Most of my pieces end up being sold on Craigslist.  So I can’t say that I have really achieved that goal.

I’ve read that on average it takes 8 to 10 hours to write a blog post.  That includes writing the post as well as taking & editing photos for the post.  And it also includes the time invested in the project itself whether it be painting a piece of furniture or decorating a room for the holidays.  That sounds about right to me.

I usually post about 3 times a week.  That translates to 24 to 30 hours per week.  Holy cow.  Do I really spend that much time on it?  I think I might.  If you count the time spent painting furniture.  But the thing is, I’d be painting furniture anyway so even if I wasn’t writing a blog I’d still be spending a significant amount of time on that.  The time I spend just writing the blog is more like 6 – 8 hours per week.

Earlier this week I came across an article about how to drive more traffic to your blog.  I got about halfway through the article and then I just grew bored and stopped reading it.  I realized I didn’t want the goal of my blog to be gaining more followers.  I don’t want to tailor the content of my posts for the sole purpose of attracting a wider audience.

So, if I’m not meeting my original goal of selling furniture via the blog and I’m not particularly motivated to ‘attain popularity’ in the form of more followers, why do I spend that much time on this?

vintage-baking

Well, the answer is simple.  I really enjoy the process.

This is not a job for me.  It’s a pleasant pastime.

vintage-suitcases

Every now and then I have to stop and remind myself that it doesn’t matter how many followers I have, or how many ‘views’ my blog gets every day.  I have to resist the accountant side of my brain that wants to crunch the numbers.

I am not going to measure the success of my blog by the numbers.  I’m going to measure my success by whether or not I am having fun with it because that is why I do it.

vintage-typewriters

That being said, an anniversary is also a good excuse to host a giveaway to express how much I do appreciate my readers, even if I’m not counting you to measure my success.  Especially those of you who take the time to leave comments and let me know that you are out there.  Getting comments is one of the things that makes blogging fun for me, so please keep them coming.

I’m going to give away two gifts today.  The first is already spoken for and is going to Victoria.  Victoria and I have never met.  She lives down south, while I am up north.  Victoria found my blog back in December of 2013, so only one month after I started blogging.  Since then she has left me 557 comments making her far and away the most prolific ‘commenter’ (not a real word, I know) on my blog!  And I have appreciated each and every one of those comments.  Thank you for all of your kinds words of encouragement Victoria!  I hope you enjoy your gift, it will be on its way to you soon.

For the 2nd prize, I will draw a name at random from any comments left on this post by Friday, December 2 at midnight.  There are no special requirements, you don’t have to follow me or click on a link to something; you just have to leave a comment.  I hope you’ll take a moment to do so.  Here’s what you’ll get (MMS milk paint in Schloss, a tiny green vintage floral frog with a Christmas greeting, a set of vintage cookie cutters, the latest issue of Flea Market Style and the Winter 2016 issue of Flea Market Decor).

giveaway-2

Flea Market Style has a great article about re-purposing vintage cookie cutters …

giveaway-1

So when I saw this Christmas-y set at a local shop I knew I had to grab them and throw them in.

I hope you’ll continue to read my blog and leave the occasional comment or two down the road just to encourage me.  Here’s to another year!  And don’t forget to leave a comment for your chance to win!

I’m so glad you’ve encouraged me to do so again.
Honestly I found your blog because it started with a Q.
That letter is very special to me because my son’s name starts with a Q as well.
Thank you for your honest opinions and for sharing more than furniture redo’s with me, the non-commenting reader, until now;)

She’s the creative carpenter/painter in the family – I’m just the cheering section. She said you were from Minnesota and we grew up in St. Paul so I was on board! Thank you for your detailed explanations and beautiful photos; it’s a pleasure to read…

I live in Woodbury, and my daughter and I came to your most recent carriage house sale. I wanted to come home with everything, but I had to limit myself due to space constraints. I love your photos, your style, and the beauty of the pieces you bring to new life. Thanks for the fun!

-you don’t have obnoxious ads that make my computer hiccup while they load some sales pitch for a loan, or pillow or some other things I am not interested in but have to wait on.
-you are a great writer and photographer and don’t make the pictures so big I have to scroll to see the content
-I can read the blog without clicking on those little half sentences that take me to more
-you have great taste in colors and furniture
-you are real, live in a real world, have real plans and think about real decorating needs

So from me, thanks for sharing, and for taking the time to put it together so often.

    1. Earlier this year I changed my blog format to increase the size of my photos and that was something I tried to pay close attention to. I like to be able to see the entire photo on the screen at once. There is nothing more distracting than having to scroll up and down to see the whole photo. I feel like my photos are now maybe just a hair too big though. I may still scale them back a bit, but just a bit. I also want to mention, since you brought it up, that not making you click on one of those little half sentences to take you to read the full blog post is another way in which I don’t ‘count’ you. just another service I’m providing here at q is for quandie 😉

Reading that comments really matter to you, has given me the courage to leave this message. I promise I will write more often. I want to thank to you for sharing your stories and your amazing “eye”. Your photos are beautiful. I’m often inspired by them. They have helped me to see the potential in items at flea markets and thrift shops. Sometimes this newfound gift is a blessing, sometimes it is a curse! I have started collecting rolling pins. I love baking and old rolling pins capture that love. I am planning on displaying them in my kitchen in a creative way. I’ll send you a photo when I’ve figured it out. In the meantime, thank you for sharing your talents. I always look forward to reading your posts.

But, I was researching Fusion Mineral Paints to do my first project…which turned out pretty well…and I found your blog, along with two others. Yours was the only one that I kept up with, and I open it each time it comes in my email. You have exquisite taste, in my opinion, so I love looking at your stuff. I learn a lot, being a newbie. I also didn’t know they made flea market magazines, so I’ll be researching those. What a great resource! Thanks so much & Happy Holidays!! 🙂

As for the flea market magazines, the one pictured is Flea Market Style and was started by Ki Nassauer who also started Junk Bonanza (if you are familiar). She used to live here in Minnesota but abandoned us in favor of California some time ago. Well, who can really blame her for that. I didn’t realize it until I read a local newspaper article, but this is the first issue of the magazine to be published after a two year hiatus. I found my copy in a local grocery store, Kowalski’s. If you don’t win the prize, be sure to look for the magazine. It’s well worth it.

  18. I love reading your blog. There is always something to glean. I have left the blogs that are purely money-makers and number counters. While it’s nice to make money on a blog, keeping the flow and keeping it real don’t usually mix with ads and commercials. They feel stilted. It’s like the actor breaking into song within a movie. There is actually no way to do it smoothly and seamlessly. I don’t read those kinds of blogs. Here’s to the next year! Thank you for the opportunity to win!

  44. So, Linda, I was surprised to read that you are only 3 years old! Curious to figure exactly how long I have been following you I started scrolling backwards in your blog to find the beginning. On the way I was amazed at the sheer number of furniture pieces you have painted. There were so many I had forgotten about. It was rather like going through a file of magazine pages like I used to tear out and keep because “one day” I wanted to use them in my own home. So many great tips, colors, how-tos, decor ideas! Even though I have not loved everything you have done (a pickle green dresser, for sure) I have admired your taste, creativity, and daring to try new things. In the end, I recalled articles from about a week into your publishing. I was in a phase when I wanted not only to learn as much as possible about painting, but to accustom my eye to what style and colors would give me furniture with enduring beauty. I followed a great many furniture blogs back then and read a reference to you which prompted me to check you out. After all these years I only continue to follow you and two others. A big glass of bubbly to you (and your cast of supporters; Mr. Q, Ken, NNK and Debbie… ) on your success and endurance. I hope painting and blogging can continue to give you joy for many years to come!
