the silky whites.

A long while back I shared a post comparing the various shades of Dixie Belle chalk style white paint, and at the time I promised to do the same with their Silk line of paint (be sure to read to the end, there is a giveaway!).

So, better late than never, here it is!

As a reminder, the Silk All-in-One Mineral paint has a built in primer and top coat.  It’s a one step product, just clean your piece first, then paint and you’re done.  Once caveat, if you’re painting a piece with serious bleed-thru using one of the white Silk paints, I would still prime with B.O.S.S.  The stain blocking abilities of this paint may not be enough for that situation.

There are 4 shades of white in the Silk paint line.  I was surprised by that since the entire line started with only 20 colors total (it now has 30 with the addition of the Desert Collection).  But now that I’ve done a little comparing, I get it.  And really, as a person who is fairly picky about shades of white, I really shouldn’t have been surprised at all that 20% of their first collection of colors were shades of white.

The shades of white in the Silk line are Endless Shore, Oyster, Saltwater and Whitecap.  At first glance it may appear as though there isn’t much difference between these colors.

But side by side, you can certainly see the differences between them.  The Oyster has the tiniest hint of grey in the background.  The Whitecap is the brightest white.  Dixie Belle calls Saltwater an off-white, it is a bit less bright white than the Whitecap, and definitely brighter than Endless Shore.  The Endless Shore is the color that comes closest to my favorite white ever, Drop Cloth, and is a very warm off-white.

I have to confess, I haven’t used much of the Silk whites.  That’s because I really LOVE my Dixie Belle Drop Cloth, so every time I go to paint something white I automatically grab that paint first.  However, there are certain applications where I prefer using a paint with a built in primer and top coat such as painting the insides of a bookshelf or cupboard (or toolbox), or painting pieces that I don’t want to distress.

The only example of an item painted in one of the Silk whites on my blog is this crate that I painted for the swanky swigs earlier this year.  It’s painted in Endless Shore.

Another reason I haven’t really used much of the Silk whites is that I usually like to use this paint with its built in primer and top coat on the insides of things, and that’s where I tend to add a bold color.  Such as the Fiery Sky inside this toolbox …

Or the Mojave inside this washstand.

But I ordered up a couple jars of the Saltwater a while back and I plan to start using it to refresh the paint on various trim throughout our house.  I think this paint is going to be perfect for window trim and baseboards, and the Saltwater is a great match for the white on the trim in our house.  Painting trim feels like it should be a winter project to me.

The Silk paint would also be a great choice for bathroom or kitchen cabinets.  Another winter project I’m considering is painting the insides of our kitchen cabinets.  Although if I do that I may opt for a pretty pop of color.  Or it might even be fun to go dark … hmmm, I’ll have to give that some thought.

But in the meantime, today I’m going to give one of you the chance to try all four of the Dixie Belle Silk All-in-One Mineral paint whites for yourself.

Thank you to Dixie Belle Paint Co for providing their paint that I’m giving away today.

  1. Your four whites in the Silk line is so helpful. To see them next to each other takes much of the guess work out. I am also very fussy about the whites I choose and it’s hard to pick just one. Thank you for this helpful post!

  2. I tend to go for the whites, black, or grays as they always sell the best in my antique booth. I have used the Silk on a couple of pieces and do like it.

  3. I look forward to you painting your cabinets and trim down the road. I have always been chicken about painting cabinets and I really want to see the process and how these paints do.

  4. Thanks for the comparison of these whites! I purchased a jar of Endless Shore this summer and I like it, but it is just a tiny bit too yellow for me. I would love to compare the other colors of white in Silk. I think Saltwater might be perfect for me, but I will use all 4 colors if I win!!

  5. It’s really interesting how different white paints can look. I liked Oyster online but in the comparison picture it looks bluish. I would love to try these out.

  6. Thanks for yet another great blog post and for introducing me to new brand of paint. The Silk Whites look amazing. I would love the opportunity to try these out.

  7. Thanks for the colour update. It’s hard to determine the undertones of paints and this makes it straight forward. All in one paints certainly have their place and easy to use. I love the matte finish of chalk based paints with wax or hemp oil- still my favourite.

  8. Whites are so tricky – and you’ve taken the guess work out with this comparison! With multiple projects, I too would put all 4 whites to work this winter. Thanks for the great info and opportunity to win.

  9. So many shades of white in the world! People who don’t paint furniture have no idea why we get so excited over a clear review of whites. Thank you- I’ve never used their Silk line but love the thought of no topcoat!

  10. Oh, thank you up so much for the encouragement and inspiration by the examples provided. Sometimes I’m so unsure which way to go paint wise, but as many have said, “Paint is an inexpensive way to try something new!”
I can always repaint, choices and new chances!

  11. I would love to try the Silky Whites! Drop cloth is my favorite Dixie Belle white but I do have a small table I need to paint in a whiter white to match a white cabinet I bought. Here’s hoping! lol

  12. I haven’t tried the Silk paint yet. I almost always use Milk Paint as that look goes with my antique/vintage business. But I would love to try the Silk for the inside of the furniture pieces as you do.

  13. I have been using milk paints and chalk paints for years. I’d love to try a paint that is all in one like the Dixie Belle Silk All-in-One Mineral paints. I always talk myself out of it because they are pricey. Thanks for all you share and being an inspiration!

  14. I have not used the Silk paint on a project, but I believe it compares to Fushion paint. I do love whites as my go to “standard” when painting furniture. I’m sure Silk paint has great appeal with the topcoat built in. Thanks for the post, as usual you are very thorough in your photos and copy. Love learning from you.

  15. Good morning from ridiculously sunny Colorado!! Looks like things are still quite green in your neck of the woods.

I like that you put the swatches next to each other. I would have been hard pressed to see the subtle differences otherwise! Anyway, my hand is up and ‘ooh! Ooh! Ooh! Pick me! Pick me’!!

  16. I never thought of using the paints with a built in primer and top coat on the inside of cabinets, drawers, etc. Thanks for that tip! If I win the drawing, I already have some projects in mind.

  17. I never realized how shades of white vary until I painted the kitchen cabinets in my cottage. I put six swatches on the wall (that all looked pretty much the same in the jar) and was amazed at how different they looked, especially as the light changed throughout the day. I chose a warm, creamy off-white in the end and I love it. It would be so fun to experiment with the different whites in the Silk line. 🙂

  18. I never understand how there can be so many colors of one color! White is white in my crayon box, And then I go to paint samples and it blows up to 15 “whites”. I’ll have to see how it happens.

  19. Whites are really hard! To bright, too yellow, AND forget it if you have to seal it because that can change it all!! Thank you for this blog! It is one of the only that I actually follow every post!! I even made one of the toolboxes you posted it’s one of my favorite things!

  21. I was a Dixie Belle dealer in my store for several years and I enjoyed it very much. I absolutely love the paint. Unfortunately, I had to cancel my dealership because of health reasons. I miss selling the paint but I never had a chance to try the silk paints. I’m hoping in the not too far future I’ll be able to get reinstated as a dealer. Thanks for sharing all you do with the Dixie Belle paint!

  22. Love your blog! I am also a huge fan of Dixie Bell paints – and Drop Cloth is also my favorite. So appreciate your post regarding their Silk Line and based on your overview I plan on also using for interior trim work refresh. KIndest regards, Lauren

  23. I love reading your blog. You’ve got my interest in this paint, with built in base & top coats. I’ve wanted to paint our kitchen cabinets in a white color, and have been researching primers, top coats, etc. The idea that some topcoats “yellow” has held me back from moving forward on this project. So this paint with built in base & topcoat sounds like it might be the best option for a kitchen.

  24. Hmmm,I haven’t heard of or used silk paints but love the idea of the one and done aspect.
Is there a reason you don’t distress with this product?

    1. The Silk paint can be distressed by sanding, but because of the built in top coat you can’t use the wet distress method with it (where you use a wet cloth to rub away paint from areas on a piece) once the paint is dry. But I have distressed some things painted in Silk, like that swanky swigs crate. If you go back up and look at that photo you can see it is well distressed around the edges.

  25. I use more white paint than any other color. It’s nice to see the comparisons. Love that the Silk paint doesn’t require a topcoat. Always love the before and afters as well!
