a sample sized giveaway.

Last week while my sister, niece and I were at Disney World the Food & Wine Festival was taking place at Epcot.

During the F & W Festival there are kiosks set up in each of the various countries around the World Showcase where you can purchase samples of food and wine from those parts of the world.  Some of my favorites included the Bougatsa from Greece, a phyllo dough strudel with sweet vanilla custard filling drizzled with lemon-honey syrup, and the Canadian cheddar cheese soup and pretzel roll.  The Grand Marnier orange slush at the France pavilion was pretty fab as well.

The samples are sized smaller so that you can try lots of different things, rather than just one.  What a great concept, right?

Last month when I attended the Miss Mustard Seed paint workshop at Carver Junk Co I saw that each participant received a little sample sized bag of milk paint to take home along with their finished projects.  I’d forgotten that you could get MMS milk paint in these adorable little sample size bags.

Each bag contains just enough paint to mix up and try out on something small.

What a great way to try milk paint for the first time!  I always recommend that you start with something small if you’re a milk paint newbie.  Maybe a wooden picture frame, or a small shelf or a little keepsake box.

But really, it’s also the best way to try a  particular color for the first time.  As much as I try to get the white balance right in my photos, the bottom line is that colors don’t always look true in a photo.  The color settings on your device might be different than mine.  Even between my computer monitor and my phone the colors in my photos can look quite different.  I really prefer to see a color in person before I commit to using it on a piece of furniture.

Although I’ve worked with almost all of the Miss Mustard Seed paint colors, there are a couple that I haven’t tried yet.  One of them is Bergere.  What color is that anyway?  Blue?  Gray?  How pale is it?  What will it look like with my chosen top coat?

Before committing to using Bergere on a big piece of furniture, I decided to mix up a sample to paint on this little wooden recipe box that my friend Sue gave me.

I mixed about 1.5 tablespoons of paint with the same amount of water (the sample bags contain 30 g of paint powder, or roughly 2 T).  I gave the paint powder about 10 minutes for the ingredients to fully dissolve in the water.  Then I gave my paint another good stir and painted it on.

I probably could have gotten away with two coats of this color, but since I had the paint mixed and there was still enough to go around I added a 3rd coat for good measure.

Here is the box painted, but without a top coat.

Then to add a little something extra, I decided to add another of my IOD french pot transfers.  I didn’t do any prep work on this box, and as a result I did get a bit more chipping than I anticipated, and that gave me a little trouble with the transfer.  I’ve mentioned this before, but if your paint is chippy it will stick to the transfer sheet rather than the transfer coming off on your painted surface.  As a result I had to be very gentle while pulling the backing sheet off, but I managed to get it off without losing any of it.

To make sure the transfer didn’t chip off along with some paint down the road, I added two coats of Miss Mustard Seed Tough Coat Sealer to seal everything up.  The Tough Coat darkened up the color just a bit, and added just a little bit of shine.

This is just an example of what you can do with a sample of Miss Mustard Seed milk paint!

I love little projects like this that can be completed in a couple of hours.  They are so satisfying!

And now it’s your chance to see what you can paint with a sample sized bag of Miss Mustard Seed milk paint.  I have 10 sample bags provided by the manufacturer to give away.  To be eligible to win, just leave a comment on this post by Sunday, November 12 at noon central time telling me which Miss Mustard Seed color(s) you’d pick to try out.

The fine print:  5 winners will be chosen at random.  Each winner will receive two sample sized bags of milk paint.  The winners won’t necessarily receive their colors of choice, although I’ll do what I can.

Even if you don’t win a sample, consider ordering some colors to give them a try.  Specially for us,  Carver Junk Co is offering 3 sample bags of Miss Mustard Seed milk paint for $18 with free shipping!  Use the code MILKPAINT when you place your order to get the free shipping!

Be sure to check back here next week to see who won, to read more details about my trip to Epcot and to see the latest piece of furniture I painted!

  1. I have yet to try milk paint. It would be fun to try it out. I think I would like Eulalies Sky, Grain Sack, and even French Enamel. They all are beautiful though. I enjoy your blog every morning. Thanks for the giveaway chance!

    1. All excellent choices Cyndi! The French Enamel is such a pretty blue, and Grain Sack is a color I didn’t love at first, but it has since grown on me and now I have 3 pieces in my own bedroom painted in that color.

  2. I saw a color on the packages that looked like orange (if computer is correct), then I got excited, as it is the accent color in my kitchen. Am smiling now thinking about trying it out. Win or not, thank you for your blog, have learned a lot.

    1. Miss Mustard Seed does have an orange, it’s called Outback Petticoat, but I don’t have that one to give away. The color you’re seeing in my photo is Mustard Seed Yellow. I have to warn you that those dots of color on the bags themselves can be misleading. I’ll keep my fingers crossed that you win, but if you want to try the Outback Petticoat be sure you order some from Carver Junk!

  4. Oooh fun! Well, I love your projects with Boxwood and Typewriter so I don’t know if those are tucked in there somewhere, but Grainsack and Kitchen Scale are favorites too! I’ve been staining baseboards and trim for the basement remodel, so a little project would be a nice change 🙂

  5. I read the first comment by Cyndi and had to laugh- I too have never tried milk paint and Eulalies Sky, Grain Sack, and French Enamel are my choices also! I have a lot of blue accents throughout my house long with a blue kitchen. I also have a lot of projects that I saved for the coming winter that I would love to try milk paint on.
Thank you for providing another informational post!

  6. I’ve never bought milk paint, only mixed my own. I’d love to try a MMS colour! I like them all, but the two very dark colours-typewriter and curio. I do live in Canada so not sure if I’m even eligible for your giveaway….

  7. Hard to narrow my choice to two colors! I purchased a head board, made from a door, that you had at dwell. in Afton. I have been wanting to paint some other items in the room the same color but am unsure which “white” it is.
If you happen to know what color you may have used that would be great. Perhaps Farmhouse White? That is my first choice and then I’ll choose Trophy. Enjoy your blog so much! I too love vintage Christmas ornaments and have a non-collection as well! Thank you!

    1. I had a headboard at dwell? Hmmmm … not ringing any bells. But if you can send me a photo of it, I can check my memory banks for the color (email it to me at qisforquandie@gmail.com). And don’t you just love the vintage ornaments. Every year when I put up my tree I marvel at how pretty they all are, especially the hand painted ones.

I would also like to try some of the gray shades or the whites, but I would be happy to try any color. Also typewriter would be great. I have some small wood boxes and frames that would be perfect to try in any color. Thank you for offering this giveaway!

  10. Have not worked with chalk paint yet. Not sure about mixing. Typewriter, tricycle and shutter gray all look interesting do you have to seal chalk paint?

    Like

    1. Milk paint is different from chalk paint. This is milk paint, and it does come as a powder that you have to mix with water when you are ready to use it, but it’s really very simple. If you can add water and stir, you have the necessary skills! You don’t absolutely have to seal milk paint, but if you want it to resist water and dirt you can seal it with wax, hemp oil, finishing creams or other sealers.

I posted one for sale and had many inquiries…I had to explain what a bergeré chair is! Lol So, maybe I’ll just paint the chair in bergeré milk paint and repost it. I love irony!

  19. I’d love some samples to tryout! I am trying to decide if I am going to wallpaper or paint the inside of the buffet that I am turning into a bathroom vanity. I don’t have a preferred color, a surprise would be nice 🙂

    Like

    1. Well, to be honest, I’d suggest using Fusion paint for the inside of a bathroom vanity. Once cured it is fully washable and more resistant to water than milk paint would be. I certainly love milk paint and probably use it more than any other paint, but certain applications are really better served by the durability of Fusion acrylic paint. But of course, you could still use the samples on something else!

    1. No, no, it’s not scary at all! But being able to judge how much paint you’ll need is something that takes a little practice. I have a tip on that. Pay attention to how much you mix the first time, say for example you mix 1/4 c powder with a 1/4 c water. Then paint the first coat on your piece. If it looks like you’ve used more than half your paint, but you still need a second coat, then add in a little more water and powder before beginning your second coat. Repeat if you need a 3rd coat. Easy peasy.
