My sister and I braved the cold snap this past Saturday to do a little thrifting.  I came home with a fun pile of goodies to share with you today …

Some of the items will be left ‘as is’ such as the glass cloches, the vintage pudding mold and the cement garden bird.

Some of the items have a bit more work to be done on them, such as the suitcases.  I’ll be devoting a full post to the aqua suitcase with the bad stencil job later.

But a few of the items have already received their makeovers starting with this tray.

This one really didn’t need a makeover, but I wanted to tweak just a couple of details.  I painted the wooden handle thingie in the middle black instead of red, and then I added a transfer from re.design with prima’s Everyday Farmhouse collection.

Next up was this cute little box.

  Again, it didn’t need a lot of work, but I freshened it up with a coat of Dixie Belle’s Drop Cloth and then added a transfer from the Classic Vintage Labels.

It’s amazing what the addition of a simple transfer can do for something.

The little metal watering can also benefited from the addition of a Classic Vintage Label.

Finally, did you notice the set of stacking boxes?

These are classic 80’s country style, don’t you agree?

I gave them a little update with some fresh paint and more transfers.

The boxes are all painted in Dixie Belle paint from top to bottom, Drop Cloth, French Linen and Midnight Sky.

The top two boxes have Classic Vintage Label transfers on them, and the bottom black box has part of the Somewhere in France transfer on it.

  2. It’s so amazing what a little paint and these transfers do. It makes out of date things fresh and current! So fun to see the differences. I think you will sell these quickly!

    1. Love, love, love those boxes! I wish I could envision the transformation when I first see the boxes. It’s a gift for sure. And you’ve definitely got the gift for reimagining! Good job on these!

    1. Ah, so you noticed I didn’t give away my top secret thrifting locations 😉 LOL. JK, actually we went to the Turnstyle in Roseville next to Dick Blick. I was pleasantly surprised to find that they had a lot of fun smalls at reasonable prices. That’s where I found the Paris suitcase. We also hit up two Goodwills and My Thrift Store on Rice St. None of these can really compare to Arc, but beggars can’t be choosers.

      1. Haa, of course I noticed. I have always been surprised at the relative reasonable prices on Turnstyle small homegoods because their clothing, etc is high. I’ll have to look for My Thrift Store, never heard of it. You’re right, none of them compare :/

      2. Turnstyle’s furniture prices were way too high for me also. But the smalls were fairly reasonable. Plus they were having a 20% off sale, so that helped as well. My sister and I were noticing the differences between the 3 types of stores. Turnstyle was clean and neat, things were sorted by color and easy to see on the shelves. Goodwill was just a bit more jumbled with narrow aisles (it’s so hard to shop there with a cart). Then at the bottom of the list, My Thrift Store is a jumbled up mess with things literally in piles sometimes. But I know you, and you’re not afraid to dig a little, right? and also fyi, it’s right next to the Lamplighter 😉

  4. Great finds! Especially love the dark paint with gold transfer, but always love the classic white with black transfers. Where are your favorite thrifting haunts?

    1. My favorite thrifting haunt closed down a few months back (it was the Arc Value Village on White Bear Ave), so now I’m trying to search out some new places. Check out my reply to Meggan above to see where we ended up.

  5. Sounds like a fun day with your sister and I love what you did with each piece!! I received Prima’s Classic Vintage Labels in the mail last week and I’ve used several of them already! I used them on metal, a crock, and several wooden boxes, and they all look great! So glad you showed them to us!! 🙂

    1. Funny enough they were from two different thrift stores. Of course, you just never know what you’re going to find at a thrift store so you may never find one again.

  11. Wow! What a cool haul! (Jealous jealous jealous of your resources!!!!!!) And all the transfers look so good! How how how in the world did you get such a SMOOTH finish on those cardboard boxes? Some technique is still eluding me! Miss Quandie is the maestro!

    1. I did sand the boxes down a bit before I started painting, otherwise you would have seen an outline from that previous paint job. I did paint them with the Dixie Belle paint straight out of the jar (not watered down). Otherwise, nothing special that I can think of.

  13. I’ve never seen a cloche at a thrift store. Last time I went to the one on Rice St, there were two men doing a drug deal in the children’s clothing section. I never went back, but I used to find such great stuff there!

    1. Oh boy. Well, I haven’t seen that, but I will admit the one on Rice St is not in the nicest part of town. I definitely wouldn’t go there after dark or by myself. My sister is from New Jersey though, so she doesn’t even bat an eye …

  14. Love your posts Linda, most can’t see beyond goodwill or thrift shop items being just plain junk. You see it and before you even have it home you have a plan to refurbish and make it a true treasure! You go girl!💞💞💞

  18. Love your finds & what you did with them! I haven’t gone thrifting for several years due to two moves in 2.5 years. Trying to clear out things I haven’t used in a long time so I don’t want to bring in more. I’m working on the kitchen now, then the entryway railing & then the very, very BLUE bathroom! Hopefully by spring & then…more fun.

  20. Seriously! it was in the 60s in CT this weekend, but the cold air has moved back in. At least I could get outside to sand. I love all these transformations. Simple yet so effective! You have once again inspired me to move on my pile of thrifted smalls. My labels transfer just arrived too! So excited…I saw it here first.

    1. Dang! I hope you enjoyed those 60’s while they lasted. It was somewhere around 10 degrees here while we were out thrifting. It got pretty cold loading all of these goodies into the car. Have fun with your labels!

    1. Surprisingly, that little watering can is functional. But you sure couldn’t water much with it. Still, it’s pretty adorable and would be perfect just decorating a shelf 🙂
