Do you remember me mentioning the Eastlake table that I purchased at a garage sale earlier this summer?

I made a classic mistake when purchasing it.  I didn’t look under the items sitting on top of the table in order to fully judge the condition.  I knew that it would need a little gluing and a new paint job, but I was thinking I would strip the top and leave it wood.

It wasn’t until after I’d paid for it that I realized it had a giant, deep burn mark in the top.

Dang.

There was no way I could salvage the wood finish with that flaw.

However, I could fill the spot with some Dixie Belle Mud and then paint the top along with the rest of the table.  In the end, that seemed like the best way to fully disguise that burn.

I simply used a putty knife to fill the giant burn hole crater (OK, maybe a little bit of an exaggeration).  I let the first application dry and then added a second just to make sure it was going to sand flat.

Once that dried, I sanded the entire piece and then painted it with a couple of coats of Dixie Belle’s Caviar.

I sanded to distress the edges and then finished it with some of Dixie Belle’s Best Dang Wax in Black.

And the end result is a fairly good looking side table with no discernible burn marks.

The carving on the legs is such a pretty detail.

I hauled the table outside on Monday evening after I got home from work.  The light was just perfect and I love staging photos of furniture surrounded by fallen leaves.

I just added a caged pumpkin, some magazines …

and a chair.

Although really I think this table would be better suited as a bedside table, there was no way I was going to haul a bed out there for a photo shoot 😉

I’ll be taking this table in to Reclaiming Beautiful (the shop in Stillwater where I occasionally sell my items) tonight, so if any of you locals are in need of a bedside table either let me know asap or else be sure to head out to Reclaiming Beautiful this weekend.

  1. I don’t remember a reference to the Eastlake table in previous posts, but I don’t remember yesterday, so there’s that. But it is a beautiful table. And painting it all black is a perfect way to give it a long lasting life. How would you compare Dixie Belles mud to other wood fillers? I love the spoon carvings on the leg of the table, and along the sides. Other than Empire, this is one of my most favorite styles.

    1. Prior to using the Mud I was mainly using the Elmers Pro Bond Walnut wood filler that comes in a tube. I found those tubes frustrating to use because they clogged and after being open for more than a week or two it was really hard to get the stuff out of the tube. But I know you can also buy Elmers wood filler in a tub, I’ve just never tried that version. Otherwise, I’d say these two products are very comparable. I will warn you against using any of the fillers that ‘change color’ when dry (the ones that go on purple but dry white for example). They will turn your pale colors of paint purple!

  3. Ha ha. You didn’t want to haul a bed out for photos after a full work day?!?

    The table is lovely. It may not have turned out as planned, but it is a success in my eye 🙂

    1. It is not my shop, the owners are two lovely ladies named Susan and Monique. I just sell there on consignment and occasionally write posts for their blog. I will definitely pass on your compliments to them tonight when I see them though!

  9. I liked the Eastlake table before but absolutely love it after the Caviar paint. All that spoon-carve detailing was completely lost before. I didn’t even notice it before! This will now make a beautiful bedside table for some lucky person! Thank you for the tip on the color changing putty.I’ve used it before under darker colors and am so glad I don’t have to go through what you did by using it under a lighter color. I appreciate all your tips and learn so much from you!
