A couple of you have suggested that I share a tour of my gardens, and based on that title you might be thinking that this is it.  But no.  I am working on a garden post, but I’ve also got lots of furniture posts coming up so I’m not sure if I’ll get to it and I’m not making any promises.  Plus, that would require at bit more weeding than I’ve been doing lately.

As for today’s post, ‘garden beds’ is just a play on words.

You might remember this pair of twin beds that I purchased at the Roseville City Wide Garage Sales.

I simply couldn’t resist a matched pair of vintage twin beds.  That’s just not something that I see very often.

Because they have some nice flat expanses on both the headboards and the foot boards, I thought they would be wonderful candidates for some Prima Marketing transfers.  I was running this idea past my friend Sue and trying to decide between the Seeds transfer and the Catalogue transfer when she suggested that it would be fun to use the Seeds transfer and call them Garden Beds!

I started by prepping the beds with a little light sanding and a good cleaning with TSP Substitute.  Next I painted them with two coats of Fusion’s Limestone.  This is my favorite of the Fusion whites because I like a warm creamy white rather than a crisp, bright white.

The reason I chose Fusion paint for this project was simple.  I wanted to avoid having to both paint and add a top coat.  It was a lot of painting, and I went through almost an entire jar of the Limestone on these beds.  But don’t forget I was painting two headboards, both the front and back of two foot boards plus four side rails.

Once the paint was dry, I sanded the edges to distress them.

Next I pulled out two of the large Seeds transfers (there is also a smaller version of this transfer available) and rolled one out to decide on the placement that I thought would work the best on the beds.

This transfer really is quite large and that’s one of the things that I love about it.  You get a lot of bang for your buck with this one (you can find it online as low as $17.99, so google it and shop around).  Well, actually that’s true with all of the large Prima Marketing transfers.  Believe it or not I wasn’t even able to use the entire thing between both the headboard and the foot board of each bed.  I cut off the top line, plus another line that was under “flowering roots”.

And that made them perfect.

In addition to the fun of calling them ‘garden beds’, I thought the Seeds transfer was also a good match for the flower detail on the beds.

By the way, these transfers went on easy peasy.  It’s hard to take photos of the process while you are doing it so I’ve never done a full on tutorial on how to apply them.  I’ll have to add that to my to-do list right after ‘weed the garden’.

I really couldn’t be any happier with how these beds turned out.

I think they’d be perfect for a lakeside cabin guest room, or for a girl’s room.

I wish I had a spot for them at my house, but there is no room at the inn.  They will be for sale while they last and for now I hope to sell them together as a set.  I suppose if they don’t sell I’ll have to re-visit that plan, but I’m hoping someone will keep them together.  If you are local and in need of some twin beds, be sure to check out my ‘available for local sale’ page for more details.

  5. LOVE the beds! I’m guessing (hoping for you) they already sold. I’ve purchased some transfers, but am too scared to use them! LOL I think Sausha did a video, so I’ll look around for it. It would be good to have a free transfer … I’m just saying!! 😉

  17. The matching beds are beyond lovely! I wish I had room in my house and a need for them because they would be mine!!! I have a tiny question, once you put the transfer on, do they feel raised or like stickers? I’m the poor girl who had a defective set and came to you for advice and would really like to know this before I invest again! The Prima Marketing Company had no idea as to why the things that occurred could’ve happened and I was given a full refund (shipping included) from TPPL without any problems. I truly want to try these again, especially since you’ve had such wonderful/beautiful results and I’m sure my problems occurred only due to some defect that happened. I’m still a huge Prima Marketing fan and love their Metallique Waxes. I’ve used mine many times and actually love them more than the more expensive French brand that is 4x as expensive! I always know I can trust any product you recommend! Your word is true and your work is always phenomenal – and I love that you admit to screw-ups and mistakes then teach us how to prevent it or how to go with the flow to come out with a beautiful project despite of, or because of the troubles. You are a blessing to those of us who also paint and re-furb vintage furniture. You make it all fun! Thank you and Mr. Q as always. BTW~ Ever since his “Tiny Bubbles” comment, I’ve heard the song everywhere! LOL!

    1. Yep, I’ve had my fair share of screw-ups. But I always learn something from them, so it’s good to pass that knowledge on to others 😉 After reading your comment I had to go out into the other room and ‘feel’ my cupboard with the transfer on it. I have to say that I can’t really ‘feel’ the transfer. If I remember right, I didn’t add any sort of top coat over that transfer. I also have a piece here that has a transfer with wax over it, and same answer. It doesn’t feel raised or like a sticker. I also have a piece with a transfer with The Real Milk Paint Co’s finishing cream over it, and again, same answer. One you have your transfer rubbed onto the piece, I do recommend going over it with your finger after you take the plastic sheet off and making sure all parts of it are adhered. After that I’ll also go over it with either a very fine sandpaper or a clean soft cloth depending on the look I want. A find sandpaper will rough up the design a little and make it look more distressed, while a clean cloth will just help make sure that everything is smoothed out and pressed down. If you’re nervous about trying another transfer, I’d recommend getting one of the sets of French Pot transfers. They come three to a set and are relatively inexpensive. They are much smaller than the large furniture transfers and you can practice with them on smaller pieces to see what you think. I used them on many things (including this jewelry box) and they are fun to play around with.

      1. I tried all the techniques you suggested on the transfer I used, plus a few more (^~^) but it still felt rather raised but looked very pretty. That part must have been caused from the defective transfer I received also. Thank you a ton for your rapid response and checking your own work for the same feeling. You are always so kind and willing to go above and beyond! I will definitely try the Prima Marketing transfers again – just maybe not the other 2 that came in the same package as the defective one! LOL! I did enjoy trying it out and loved the look despite the flaws and “tiny bubbles” that wouldn’t go away. I sanded the heck out of the edges to relieve the raised effect and discoloration along the edges and after many hours of work I don’t think anyone who doesn’t know better can tell somethings wrong but they can definitely feel the raised sticker-like feeling. I’ll just have my sis-in-law (who the project was for) gently discourage anyone from feeling that part – except she loves “petting” my furniture because I make the surfaces so buttery soft and smooth. lol

  22. I love them, but then I love everything you put out here. I’ve gotten my first Prima transfers and am kinda nervous about them. Yours are always so perfect. I’ve watched many tutorials and will hopefully get it right. Thanks for all of your sharing and tips.

  23. Love the beds! That’s a lot of work to drag both of those outside and set up to photograph. I just finished a buffet and I’m too tired to even clean up. Lol

    1. LOL, you are so right Jane! I usually have to wait a day or two after finishing a piece to have the energy to stage it and take proper photos of it. I photographed these after work one evening last week. We had the perfect light that evening for photo taking!

  29. Quandie, such a cute idea. I once saw a bed buried part way in the ground with flowers and plants growing out of the middle mattress area…a true flower bed! Just bought another jar of Limestone the other day to finish some bead board. It truly is the perfect texture of paint and the color just goes with everything.

    1. That’s what I love about the Limestone as well. It’s one of those whites that you can bring into a room and it just works without making everything else in the room look dingy.

  36. I Love reading your blogs! Telling your readers the colors you use along with the type of paint and describing the process step by step….with a few tips thrown in, is so helpful. I got sooo lucky to be the first one to request these garden beds!! Love them!!
