On Saturday my sister and I went to the ECCO (that’s East Calhoun Community Organization) neighborhood sales.  It’s one of the smaller neighborhood sales that I go to.  This year they had 44 sales.  You’d be surprised how quickly you can hit 44 sales in a concentrated area.

This was their 44th annual neighborhood sale (44 sales on their 44th anniversary?  I wonder if they noticed that).  Holy mackerel right?  That’s a long history of sales.  Sometimes one of the problems with well established neighborhood sales like these is that you have a lot of ‘regulars’; people who hold a sale every year.  So either they have one little table with a handful of stuff, or they are selling antiques priced at antique shop prices.  One garage was full of silver.  It was gorgeous.  The husband had polished all of it and it just gleamed.  There were gorgeous serving pieces of every kind.  But sadly, not very many people are buying are buying silver serving pieces to use these days.  This stuff was probably bargain priced for silver, but priced too high for garage sale shoppers.

In the end, Debbie and I did not come home with much.  However, I did come home with five more vintage cameras to add to my non-collection!

I picked out these two because they had the flash apparatuses attached.

And I chose this one because I’d never seen one like this.

I also picked up this one.

I thought perhaps some of you may not know the little secret about this style.  If you saw this sitting on a table at a garage sale, would you pick it up?

Do you know what happens next?  Yep, it telescopes out like this …

Now sadly, this one is not in good shape.  The bellows is completely stuck inside the case.  It should look like this …

I’m debating scavenging parts from the damaged camera to make a necklace.  Check out {this necklace} by A Mark In Time to see my inspiration for that plan.

But in the meantime, I have loaded my new cameras into the cabinet on my front porch.

And it’s getting pretty full, which means it’s time to refine my collection (check out {this post} to see how the cabinet looked just a little over a year ago).  Some of the extras will make their way into my fall Carriage House sale, but I thought it would be fun to also share the wealth with you guys!

I happen to have two of these Kodak Duaflex cameras.

  10. Love your non collection; those vintage cameras are wonderful! I totally miss the days of film, when I would actually have my pictures printed – it was always so much fun to pick them up and see how they turned out. My children, home for summer break from college, must be feeling nostalgic – they have been pulling out all the old photos and re-living fun childhood times.

    What a terrific idea to make a unique necklace from that broken camera! I never would have thought of that.

  11. Wow what a great giveaway! I love cameras but my daughter Jenna is a great photographer and a collector of a couple of vintage cameras. She also has a vintage
    Kodak advertising poster and I love those old ads. As she is a single Mom, there isn’t much money left over for collecting things and 3 year olds don’t love going to garage sales. So would love to win it for her. She had 3 of her photos picked for publication in Miss Mustard Seed’s Look Book 2 .
    I also have a US postal box if I’m lucky enough to win, as I am in Canada.

  14. How absolutely generous of you! I still regret that I didn’t grab the old Brownie camera from my parents house after my mom passed away. I have a sibling that was living there at the time – she loves garage sales, and decluttering. I know it ended up either in the trash, or priced at a quarter. : ( Well, everyone looks at life differently, don’t they? : )

I started a small collection myself after seeing yours and have a couple in my bookcase. I picked up one with the flash apparatus at a thrift shop…couldn’t resist it!     I started buying them because they are like sculpture to me, but like no other sculpture because their beauty, design & art are born merely out of use.

  22. My father had a thing for cameras and I inherited his. I had one like the one you are giving away and one like the one in the leather case, plus a couple of other brownie box cameras. After you showed yours on the blog I went to look for mine. Apparently they went to the Goodwill in our last move with my kitchen cookware. Never let a tired husband label boxes. Love the camera necklace. It never ceases to amaze me how very clever some people are.

    1. I loved that necklace when I saw it on pinterest. At the time I couldn’t imagine how anyone would have the nerve to dismantle a camera to make it, but now I have the perfect candidate for that since that camera is in such bad shape overall.

  23. Oooooooo If I, win any chance I can get the broken bellows camera?!? I have a soft spot for broken things. I do altered art and that camera is just begging to become a star in the altered art world. Otherwise, let me suggest this. Why not put a stack of vintage cabinet photos in the gap where the bellows would have been? Very thematic and you could move different photos to the forefront occasionally. Lucky you to find a gorgeous broken object – besides broken me of course!

  24. A quick aside and not intended to be a cheating second entry…. you showed a photo of what the broken camera should look like. I beg to disagree. Whatever you find and in whatever condition, it is EXACTLY what it should look like. Time and use are the real artists who leave their mark for the discerning eye.

  29. These give-away cameras remind of the one I used about 45 years ago at Girl Scout Camp. I didn’t quite get how to use it, as evidenced by a few heads being chopped off at the should. I love the memory. Thank you for the opportunity to win! It would certainly be a welcomed start to another collection!

  49. I collect vintage cameras as well! I used them as part of the center pieces in my wedding last September. I agree in having to refine the collection, or else it gets overwhelming! Thanks for the great idea on how to display them!
