Remember my pile of goodies from my thrift store field trip?

You can’t see it very well, but the lampshade is sitting on top of a white metal shelf.  I think these vintage shelves were typically intended for the bathroom.  This one didn’t have much going for it, but I wanted to give it a colorful makeover.

So, I painted it with Cece Caldwell’s Santa Fe Turquoise, added some vintage wallpaper to the shelves, touched up the gold trim with some Rub ‘n Buff and added another Tim Holtz rub-on to the front.  So now, it looks like this …

I love using pretty containers for utilitarian supplies; a little crystal bowl for your cotton wipes, and a vintage pink elephant shot glass for your q-tips.

A while back I purchased a set of state trivia cards at a garage sale.  They are the perfect color for me, and I thought they would be fun for scrapbooking.  You might have noticed it clipped to the ladder in the q branch, but I borrowed it for this photo shoot to hide a nail hole in the wall.  Plus it plays into my “state of mind” theme perfectly, get it?

So, I happen to have a whole bunch of these cards for different states that I don’t really need.  If any of you are from a different state and would like your state card, leave me a comment and let me know what state you would like and I will pop it in the mail for you  (not available:  Nevada, Florida & New Jersey … and obviously Minnesota).  I don’t think I have every state, but I have quite a few.  First come, first served.

I’m not the only one who believes that lucky is a state of mind, right?

Update:  as of Sunday morning, I still have Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Idaho, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Mississippi, New Hampshire, North and South Carolina, Oregon, Rhode Island, Tennessee and Vermont.  Anyone?

  3. That is such a vintage color on the shelf it feels so 1940’s which I am pretty sure is what you were going for. Great choice Linda very stylin! I hope this lovely will be hanging round the Quandie homestead.

      1. Of course it will be…since distance prevents my attending those sales I cannot seem to remember they exist. I am trying to talk hubby into driving to Alaska to see the new grand baby this summer. Maybe we can do it around the sale. Have you selected a date yet?

    1. You can have the shelf, but not the card! Ha! But, if you really are interested in the shelf, I’ll bring it in for you next week (for those of you who don’t know, Cathy and I work together, thus I can bring it to work for her to see). I don’t know the precise measurements, but it’s around 15″ wide. I know this because I was hoping to line it with 12″ x 12″ scrapbook paper, but it was too wide for that.

  15. This is so adorable! It inspires me to find old metal shelves! What is the website for the rub ons? I’d love to have some on hand. (and BTW the two states I have called home are Missouri and Texas so I missed both!)

    1. Yeah, Missouri was a popular one! So sorry you missed your states. As for the rub-ons, you can find them at Hobby Lobby or Michaels. They are Tim Holtz brand. Here they are online at JoAnn’s (and on sale!).

  19. What a great shelf makeover, who knew that shelf could look so good! Is Pennsylvania still available? I would love to add this to a gallery wall I’m working on…would look perfect next to a picture I took the other day of shaggy cows in the snow!! So kind of you to share your finds!

    1. You know, I don’t remember seeing that one. I may have used it in a scrapbook, because I do head over that way periodically for family reunions (to a tiny town called Arlington, are you familiar?). But let me take a look to be sure … I’ll get back to you.

  26. I was reading through what had already been requested and of course the very last person asked for my state, South Carolina. Do you have California? My husband is from there, and I think he would like it. It’s so nice of you to give these away. I really love the wallpaper on the shelves. I had missed you saying you had used wallpaper, so when I got to the last two pictures where you could see it, it was such a great surprise. You really have used some great wallpaper on your pieces.
